From S. W. Canada to Leslie Cowan

Description:

Memo from University of Missouri registrar S. W. Canada to Leslie Cown, secretary of the MU Board of Curators, and university president Frederick A. Middlebush regarding Lucile Bluford filing suit against Canada in federal court for refusing her admission to the university. Canada reports that he is being sued for $20,000 in damages, and that the suit is an outgrowth of a suit filed by Bluford in the circuit court. Canada also notes that he must answer or plead to the suit within 20 days. At the time, Bluford was the managing editor of the Kansas City Call and seeking admittance to the masters degree program at MU's School of Journalism. After repeated efforts to enter the program, and repeated denials due to her race, she filed a lawsuit against the university that eventually was heard before the Missouri Supreme Court.
