Description: 

Mugshot of former Negro League baseball player Lemuel Hawkins, taken at U.S. Penitentiary, Leavenworth, Kansas. Hawkins played first base for the Kansas City Monarchs from 1921 to 1927 and the Chicago American Giants in 1928. He was convicted for attempted automobile theft in Chanute, Kansas in July 1931. Hawkins was later killed three years later when his accomplice accidentally shot him while attempting to rob a beer distribution truck in Chicago.
