Vocational Agriculture Student-Built Corner

Photograph of a corner of a tool room in the Vocational Agricultural Department at the Shawnee Mission Rural High School, circa 1935. The room contains a variety of tools, barrels, wooden carriers, and a worktable.  A scrapbook containing the original image reads, "Very little equipment has been purchased, as it has been the policy to make such things in shop where possible."

Photograph of a classroom in the Vocational Agricultural Department at the Shawnee Mission Rural High School, circa 1935. The room includes large tables lined with chairs, shelves and cabinets filled with books and equipment, large windows, and a radiator. A sign one one cabinet reads "DEPT. OF VOCATIONAL AGRICULTURE," and an emblem on the far wall reads "FFA VOCATIONAL AGRICULTURE." 

Students Testing Milk

Shawnee Mission Rural High School Snowball Fight

Shawnee Mission Rural High School

Photograph of Shawnee Mission Rural High School, looking southwest from Johnson Drive, in the early 1920s. The two-story brick building with arched entryway opened in 1922, was renamed Shawnee Mission High School in 1945, and became Shawnee Mission North High School in 1958. 

Shawnee Mission Future Farmers of America Members

The young men, dressed in FFA jackets with the organization's emblem on the chest, stand arm in arm outside the high school building. Sadie Hawkins Day with FFA Boys

Photograph of a young man running a gauntlet of classmates trying to whip him with belts on the Shawnee Mission Rural High School football field in 1940 or 1941. The young men are members of the school's chapter of Future Farmers of America. The photograph is part of the 1940-1941 Future Farmers of America "Recreation" scrapbook. A note included with the photo reads: "SADIE HAWKINS DAY: At irregular intervals a secret date is agreed upon by the school vice-president and the chapter advisor.

Johnson County Fair Exhibits and Demonstrations

Photograph of Johnson County Fair exhibit booths and demonstrations in the Shawnee Mission Rural High School gymnasium in 1931. The stage is set up for cooking demonstrations with appliances and countertops facing the gymnasium. The gymnasium floor contains exhibit booths for businesses including FFOG Stores and ABC laundry appliances. Signs hanging from the gym rafters reading "Overland Parl Lumber Co.," "Farm Crops Department," and "Swarner Drug Co."

Johnson County Fair Cooking Demonstrations

Photograph of two women standing in a demonstration kitchen on the Shawnee Mission Rural High School gymnasium stage as part of the Johnson County Fair in the early 1930s. The kitchen, bearing a Kansas City Power & Light Company sign, includes a refrigerator or ice box, a stove, and a curtained window. The women stand at a countertop, and one operates an electric stand mixer.

Johnson County Fair

Photograph of Johnson County Fair activities in the Shawnee Mission Rural High School gymnasium in 1934. Booths and demonstrations are set up around the gym floor and stage. An area displaying "hardy garden roses" from Cloverset Flower Farm occupies the foreground of the image. The left side of the image includes bleachers, a photobooth, a booth for Skelgas stoves, and a furniture booth. A booth in the middle of the image offers multiple refrigerators or iceboxes. The stage appears to be set up as a kitchen for cooking demonstrations.
